Corrroboree Billabong - Mary River Wetlands

Today we had a quiet day. We drove from Jabiru to Corroboree Creek where we joined a cruise on Mary River.

We spotted Crocs!

And Birds!

And Water Lillies.

And the Jesus Bird (walks on water) - Jacana - that's it's nickname.

Of course the Jabiru.

The honey eater.

Pair of nesting Sea Eagles.

The spooned billed Ibis.

And more crocs - this time fresh water crocs.

Back to the Salties.

We then drove to Darwin and dropped Sonia at the Vibe for a couple of days before she returns to Sydney.

Sunrise Cruise - Nourlangie Rock Art

Today we rose at 5.00am to go to our sunrise Yellow Water Cruise..

We saw this Azure Kingfisher.

This Night Heron.

The Jabiru.

We then drove to Nourlangie and walked along a 1.5km circuit which took us through a wet season home for generations of aborginal people. Evidence of long occupation and changing times is to be found in the art sites and a large rock shelter.

This is Nabulwinjbulwinj he is a dangerous male spirit who eats females after striking them with a yam.

This was Barrginj who was Namarrgon's (Lightning Man) wife.

Barrginj and Namarrgon are parents to Aljurr or Leichhardt's grasshopper.

We then went for a walk around Anbangbang Billabong, a paperbark swamp, fringed with woodlands and sandstone plateau scrub. This is a Blue Winged Kookaburra.

Gunlom Falls

Today we headed to Gunlom Falls. Gunlom is part of the Waterfall Creek, one of the 18 major tributaries of the South Alligator Creek. The South Alligator River is the only large tropical river system to be entirely protected within a National Park. This is one of the reasons why Kakadu is recognised as a World Heritage Area.

One of my wish list things to do has always been to swim under a waterfall, it is now ticked, it was such a wonderful experience in such a pristine environment.

The plunge pool below the falls.

We then drove to Yurmikmik to have a little look around there.

Next stop was Bukbukluk Lookout.

Returning to Cooinda for a swim before dinner.
